Second Sunday Poetry Series (SSPS) originated in June of 2017 at Britt Marie's restaurant on Solano Avenue in Albany. Owner Timo Rodriguez asked friend & poet Barb Reynolds to create a poetry reading for one Sunday in June. Barb grabbed fellow poets Kathryn Jordan & Penelope Barnes Thompson and the three of them gave a reading, which was packed. Timo turned to Barb and asked, "Will you create a regular series??" And Barb said yes.
SSPS took off and we are currently booked six months out, with a wide array of emerging and established poets. The cozy & intimate setting of a restaurant/bar during off-hours, along with our warm & welcoming audience, have combined to make SSPS a rich experience for both reader and listener.
The reading series is free, there is no cover charge. Buy your own drinks during the reading and dinner afterward. Barb always stays for dinner and you are welcome to join her community table, or dine with your friends. The poets' books are for sale during readings and they are available to sign them for you.
In July of 2019 Britt Marie's restaurant sold, and in August SSPS changed venues to Venus restaurant at 1889 Solano Ave., just a mile up the road.
We hope you'll come check it out!
